Take a Closer Look: The Role of Self-Assessment and Reflection

An example of self-assessment and reflection comes from the Kansas City Schools partnership with the Truman Medical Center on trauma-sensitive school practices (Zacarian et al., 2017). The two partners co-developed a curriculum to help students respond to stressors more positively. One exercise involved providing elementary students prepared handouts with a writing prompt and space for a response. Learners drew pictures of their responses in the appropriate spaces. Under their drawings, they used their emerging writing skills to express their thoughts. One student drew a picture that depicted her answer to the writing prompt, When I feel angry, I can … . It was a figure in motion. Underneath the picture she wrote, "I can walk away."
